Wait, what’s Creative Commons?

As Wikipedia puts it, “A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted “work”. A CC license is used when an author wants to give other people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they (the author) have created.”

Think of it as a way of getting permission to use a ton of pictures, music, videos, and other creative things, provided a couple of simple rules are followed.

Which license?

CC-BY 4.0. This allows you to use photos in any way, even commercially, as long as you give credit.

Why?

I’ve used plenty of Creative Common elements before in my projects, and it’s time to give back.

What do I have to do?

• Find the photo you want.
• Download it.
• Place it where you want.
• Attribute it / give credit next to the photo or in a ‘Credits’ section.

Can’t I just copy and paste something?

Sure – copy this into the Visual tab of WordPress or another rich-text sort of editor:

What happens if I use a photo without attribution?

Well, there’s the carrot and there’s the stick. I might reach out, asking you to give credit where credit is due or to take the photo down. If you add credit in a reasonable period of time, no worries, mistakes happen. If I don’t hear back from you, I would be within my rights to file a DMCA to get that page taken down or to send you an invoice for a licensing fee.

Do you have a larger version of that photo…?

Definitely. I have literally hundreds of photos taken around the world since 2008. Photos available on the website are fine for websites and low-resolution printing, however.

Depending on what you need the larger version, you may need to pay a licensing fee. Make contact below and we’ll work something out.
