@Shirley (er, mom): By subway it takes a little over an hour. By bus from southern Seoul, it can take about 45 minutes. Local buses connect Dongtan to Suwon, the closest major city and urban center (a million-plus people call it home), along with other nearby areas.

@Schplook: Thanks for the links – I had heard of the GTX, and it definitely sounds promising… It won't be around for several more years, but I'm glad they've started on it…

I think I'd quite like to live in Dongtan, but not just yet. It's not finished. Even the central shopping area near Central Park (the part below street level) is still a bit rough... and empty, for the most part.

The city (in fact, all the development in Hwaseong area) is planned to be finished by around 2020. I live by the big new stadium... it'll be done soon and is looking quite nice.

By the way, the subway that they're planning is a fast subway called the GTX. It will be an underground version of the KTX. It will be quite deep and very quick -- connecting to the Seoul metro system in under 20 minutes.
